Random Thoughts

If you live in Chicago or its suburbs, how do you not know how public transportation works? The Metra is different from the El. The Metra has scheduled trains; the El runs constantly. No one is too good-looking/rich/spoiled to not know this.

Larry Hughes, shut your mouth. Maybe if you stop jacking shots, you will play more.

Billy Madison *
Tommy Boy *

Comcast, are you serious?

Just once I would like an NFL front office, or any professional team for that matter, blame themselves for the roster they put together and not the coach. Was it Eric Mangini’s fault that Brett Favre is a gunslinger and threw about 10 interceptions in the last 3 weeks of the season? Was it Rod Marinelli’s fault that Dan Orlovsky was his starting quarterback?

As the Big Ten schedule starts today for Illinois, I thought I would put together an All-Douche Team dating back a few years.

G Tom Coverdale, Indiana (Team Captain)
G Jeff Horner, Iowa
G Eric Gordon, Indiana
F Rick Rickert, Minnesota
C Paul Davis, Michigan State

G Pierre Pierce, Iowa/Jail
G Luke Recker, Iowa
F A.J. Moye, Indiana
F D.J. White, Indiana
C Marco Killingsworth, Indiana

The Return of Person of the Weak

Back from the dead, Person of the Weak returns!

For those unfamiliar with PoW, it is a poll where you the readers vote which athlete, celebrity, douche-bag, redneck, hillbilly, or glitterati is most deserving of the title "Person of the Weak"

From now on the poll will come out every Monday and conclude Sunday night.

This weeks contestants are:

DJ AM - Besides being famous for taking other peoples music and mixing it, his parents must be proud, he is now suing the estates of the two pilots who perished in the airplane crash he was involved with a few months ago. Stay classy DJ AM.

Brett Favre - You suck and you are old. But worst of all he recently said he didn't know if he was going to return and he would have to wait and see how his shoulder feels. In any other profession he would be fired and lone gone by now. In other news ESPN just filled an hour a day in their schedule.

Coaches in the USA Today/ESPN Poll - Should we have beaten Missouri by more than 16?

Tom Crean - Losing to Lipscomb at home was a belated Christmas present. Over/under for IU Big Ten wins .5, discuss amongst yourselves.

Be Cool at Christmas

Since most of you will be hanging out with family over the next few days I decided to provide some good conversation starters. Because you can only talk about Obama turning our country into a socialist state for so long.

Hi, I'm here for the orgy

Yehhh! an XBOX....ohhh nooooo....

Where do you go when the local bakery won't make your racist cake? Wal-mart of course.

Drink Much?

I just took an online test to see whether or not I'm an alcoholic and got a solid grade of A (96%). Here was the site's response:

"It is likely that your current drinking patterns are hazardous or harmful to your health and well being. Your responses to the AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) are in a range believed to be consistent with problems related to drinking."

"Many people are not aware of how their alcohol consumption compares to that of the general public. More than 96% of the general adult American population and 93% of men consume fewer drinks per week than you reported consuming."
-
Try to see if you can score better than I. Good luck! :)

BRUTUS MAXIMUS

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?

For the record - Brutus Maximus just secured the verbal committment of 2011 PG Tracy Abrams. Abrams is a consensus top 3 player in the loaded Illinois class of 2011.

What this means - Abrams is tight with other Chicago area ballers/cagers, Mike Shaw, Sam Thompson, and Wayne Blackshear. Blackshear and Shaw have specifically mentioned wanting to play with Abrams in college. His committment also puts pressue on other players like Chasson Randle and Bradley Beal to pull the trigger before scholarships run out.

Prediction - Abrams is the headliner of a 5 man class that ranks in the top 3 nationally and gives Weber back to back top 5 classes and three straight top 10 classes.

Cool random tidbit - If the 2011 class contains all Illinois kids, their freshman class will contain 12 kids from the state of Illinois and Tyler Griffey from St Louis. Pretty badass.

People Who Shouldn't Be Allowed To Vote

Indiana Fans* - Where do I start...how about defending the hiring of a known cheater? How about the defending of said cheater even after he cheats again? How about cheering for him and chanting his name even after he has cheated for a second time because he wins? How about ripping and bad mouthing a rival coach who calls out said cheating coach for....wait for it....cheating! While those were all good, this gem on their message board pretty much says it all

"They were 22-4 while they were using under Sampson and 3-4 while they were using under Dakich."

So let me get this straight, it is better to win rather than cracking down on drug use and losing?

Mormons - All religions can sound weird or stupid; all the animals of the world on one ark, not allowing women to drive cars, and a carpenter who can walk on water. However I feel that Mormons take the cake. Do you know that Mexcian Mormons are allowed to have multiple wives? The only reason the US Mormon church outlawed polygamy is because the US government did.

NFL Fans - Now I'm not talking about the casual Bears or Packer fan who watches the games or even attends a few from time to time. I'm talking about the adult fan who wears costumes, face paint, or owns more than three articles of NFL merchandise. To be obsessed with a team that you have no connection to demonstrates low mental capacity and that you are susceptible to group think, which of course leads to mob rule.

People who wear Uggs (with apologies to friends who own them or are buying them for significant others) - I had always thought that Uggs were ugly and never understood why you would wear a boot/shoe that 50% of the population wore. But then again I never understood female fashion so I just shrugged it off, that is until I found out that a legit pair is $130+. Why on Earth would you pay that much money for a boot that is neither unique nor practical?

People who subscribe to the New York Times who don't live in New York - Nevermind that it says "New York" at the top but if you are so obsessed with a city full of d-bags and a-holes than you don't deserve to vote.

*Editors Note - We, the neighbors of Indiana, have for far too long ignored their inbreeding and meth addiction and may share some of the blame for their current situation. So next time you see an Indiana fan hitting on his cousin step in and say something.

Which One is Tom?

I've thought for awhile now that in 40 years Tom will look like either the Giants head coach, Tom Coughlin, or the Illinois Athletic Director, Ron Gunther.  You decide.

Random Musings

Maybe its just me but I feel like your flight number pretty much determines whether or not your plane has a chance of crashing. For instance, we flew to Vegas on flight #2345. I just can't see Katie Couric interrupting Two and a Half Men to say that flight #2345 crashed.

I really hate anyone involved with get out the vote. Getting past the fact that they are a bunch of liberal college kids getting other lazy college kids to vote, do we really want the kind of people voting who do so because someone else made them?

For the record Haney uses "Radiant Brunette Shampoo" and "Radiant Brunette Conditioner." I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

When USA runs American Pie 2 at 1:00 am do they really have to bleep out the swears? I can understand nudity but bleeping out "balls" is a little extreme.

Looking back at old TV shows and movies makes me think that cell phones are ruining hundreds if not thousands of scripts. You can no longer have scenes where George goes to the wrong theatre because now he would just send a text and the problem would be solved in seconds. However this doesn't seem to affect horror movies because they just set the location in a desert but you have to think even deserts won't be safe in a couple of years.

We need more piano rock. That is all.

Is it just me or is it amazing how quickly the Chicago "Bean" has become sinominous with Chicago.  Anytime you see a Bears or Bulls game and they do a video montage of the city it's the  Sears Tower, Wrigley, the L, and the Bean.

Injury Report

Why bringing fruit into the bedroom doesn't always spice things up.

I want to believe this story, just like I want to believe that D-Rose will lead the Bulls to the promised land. I'm glad to hear he is at home and in bed at night, instead of going out and shooting himself in the leg at a nightclub, or wrecking his motorcycle and ruining his career. If it is true, then he is apparently just a moron. Eating so much candy you make yourself sick in the Final 4? Leaving an apparently rediculously sharp knife in your bed and then forgetting it was there? I realize the kid is only 19 or 20, and for the most part he's played his role with some maturity and class, but if he's going to set the record for ankles broken in a career, he's got to learn how to take care of himself.

I Got Banned

I have officially been banned from all Intramurals at U of I for this semester and next. You may say, "Did you get in a fight Mark?"  No, I did not get in a fight. Just read the email conversation I had with the douche assistant director, Terry, of intramurals that got me banned.

"Captains,

Unfortunately, today and tomorrow soccer games will have to be postponed, due to the weather. If the weather breaks, we will try to play games later this week and/or starting on Sunday. The game times will stay the same, but the days will change depending on the weather, so please be prepared to play. If this weather continues, we will host the playoffs during the spring semester. If a team loses a player to graduation, we will allow a team to add two players to a roster. We will also, provide championship t-shirts to the winning teams whose members have graduated during the Fall Semester. We will keep all teams posted on any changes that are made. Thank you ahead of time for your understanding.

Terry Elmore"

"I am on Chubby Bunnies FC. I am wondering why we can't just move the games indoor to CIRCE?

Mark Haney"

"No!

Terry Elmore"

"Umm, a more mature response would be appreciated in the future. But if you want to act like a 5 year old, that's fine too. I guess I'm not surprised at the total incompetence of the intramural program now with children like you running it. Luckily I won't have to deal with it much longer as I'm graduating. Good luck running it into the ground.

Mark"

"Well, Mark I am sorry that you feel that way. I can tell you that when we do resume play, you will not be eligible to participate.

Terry Elmore"

"I expected as much when I wrote my first email.

Love,

Mark"

"Mark,

What you do not understand is that there are other programs that go on at CRCE. Trust me; you have no idea how much I would like for the soccer playoffs to go forward and to be finished. We do not control the weather and we are trying to be as accommodating as we can. What I will not tolerate from anyone is disrespect. Your ban from intramurals will be for the remainder of this semester as well as the spring semester. If you would like to appeal this ban, I am more than willing to have a meeting with you. Until that time, good luck in the future and again – I am sorry you feel the way that you do.

Terry Elmore"

"I have no intention of playing in the future. Don't worry. I wouldn't dream of giving your terribly run program any more money.

Respect,

Mark"

"Good Luck!

Terry Elmore"

Vegas Review Baby!

I am going to provide my review of our recent trip to Las Vegas.  I hope that the others that attended will also chime in with some thoughts.  And don't worry.  I will keep out any information that could potentially get someone in trouble.  Look for pics by Tom or Scott on Facebook or something, I know they have them.

Venetian (The Hotel we stayed at)

Atmosphere

Amazing.  From the marble floors, paintings on the ceilings, and statutes to the indoor canals and restaurants I thought that the Venetian was awesome.  Everyone I came in contact with who worked there was really nice and always eager to make sure we were having a great time.  Also, the room was very nice and spacious for us.  We did the $20 sandwich deal and it worked for the room upgrade (Thanks Fig).  The only down side was the smell in the hallways of the Venetian.  I thought it was a bit overwhelming.  It literally smelled like someone was jamming potpourri down my throat.

Casino

The Venetian's casino was also very nice.  I will break it down into its different parts and compare them to the other casinos we were at.

Table Gaming Area (meaning table gaming like black jack and craps and slots) = very chic.  It was on par if not better than any other casino we went to (Bellagio, Caesar's, and Mirage).  The only downside was that some of the craps tables were a little more expensive than we wanted to play, so we had to walk to the Mirage (right across the street) to play there.

Poker Room (Venetian) = tops.  Very well organized and run with $1-$2 tables so schmucks like us could play.  Way nicer than Mirage's.

Sports Betting = so-so.  Don't get me wrong.  You can pretty much see any game you want there, but I thought that Caesar's had a much nicer area to view games (larger and nicer TV's to watch the games on).

Food

Grand Lux Cafe = Quality, variety, relatively cheap food (in Vegas), with large portions.  We ate there twice.  Solid.

Buffet = Didn't eat there, but it was around $29 a plate.  I'm sure its good food, but it was a bit expensive for lunch.

Canaletto = Italian eatery.  Moderately price, decent food (not knock out), but in an amazing atmosphere.  Click the following link and "Virtual Tour" to see the outside dining experience (it's actually inside the Hotel however; pretty cool huh?)

Canaletto Tour

We did go to Mon Ami Gabi (at the Paris Hotel/Casino) for steaks one night.  That was a really good restaurant.  Pretty cheap for Vegas, especially since we ordered steak.  Mine was $22 and really good.  I would recommend this place for a nice dinner that won't drain your cash.

Other than that, there is a McDonald's, Chipotle, Panda Express, Subway, etc. near by if you want to buy a cheaper meal to save cash a couple times (which I did).

Seinfeld

Hi-lar-i-ous!  He used some old material but sort of reworked it a bit so it wasn't too stale.  His newer material was great.  Also, the guy that opened for him was really funny too.  Worth every penny.

Overall

The experience was so awesome.  Even though I lost $375 gambling, I had such as amazing time, and some really hilarious stories too to boot.  Our hotel was sooooooo nice and there was lots to do in 3 days.  We slept very little because of that.  Time truly does not exist inside of casinos.

RATING for Vegas = 5 out of 5!

Heisman - Week 13

1) Graham Harrell (previously #1) – QB Texas Tech (Season: 4,438 yds, 39 TD, 5 INT, 6 rush TD)
361 yds and 3 TD in a crushing loss to Oklahoma. This is the problem with college football as it is now. Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma are all 1-1 against each other. All of their Heisman candidates are having great years, but who do you put #1 on the ballot? And who gets to play in the national championship game? Let’s just have a four, six or eight team playoff and get it over with.
Next: vs. Baylor

2) Colt McCoy (2) – QB Texas (Season: 3,134 yds, 30 TD, 7 INT, 527 rush yds, 8 rush TD)
Off last week, but can you move to #1 on this list after not playing? I don’t think so.
Next: vs. Texas A&M

3) Sam Bradford (3) – QB Oklahoma (Season: 3,710 yds, 42 TD, 6 INT, 4 rush TD)
304 yds and 4 TD in the biggest game of the year vs. Texas Tech.
Next: at Oklahoma St.

4) Tim Tebow (4) – QB Florida (Season: 2,114 yds, 22 TD, 2 INT, 427 rush yds, 11 TD)
201 yds, 3 TD, in not quite a full half against the Citadel. If Tebow is playing for a national championship come January 2009, the Heisman is going to have four legit contenders, especially if none of the Big 12 teams make it.
Next: at Florida St.

Dropped out:
Michael Crabtree (5) – WR Texas Tech (Season 84 receptions, 1,072 yds, 18 TD)
A disappointing 6 catches for 62 yds and essentially an elimination from the Heisman race.
Next: vs. Baylor

Working Out Is Overrated

Hello everyone. This is my first post and it probably sucks, SO BACK OFF!

I am not really sure what my posts are going to be about yet, so just bear with me for now. Anyway, here's my first. It was an assignment that I had to make for my ART 250 class. I've turned it into somewhat of a Podcast so you don't have to read it, because reading sucks balls. It's entitled "This I Believe". Please click on the link below:

This is my first contribution to this or any blog... should be interesting.

Here are some facts to let you all get to know me a little better. I live by myself, so I've got that goin for me. I am an engineer, so my social skills are highly refined. I enjoy good beer and good food, pretending to be a rock star until I lose my voice, and driving my Dodge Stratus (her name is Betty). Let's get this show on the road.

This is what I got to do at work one day.

Heisman - Week 12

Since we are approaching the end of the season, five guys have stood out pretty much the entire year. I would say any of the five guys below have a chance to win the Heisman, but no one else really does. That’s why I’m trimming my list to five for the remainder of the season.

1) Graham Harrell (previously #1) – QB Texas Tech (Season: 4,077 yds, 36 TD, 5 INT, 6 rush TD)
Off last week, but this is the biggest game of the year for Harrell and Texas Tech against Oklahoma.
Next: at Oklahoma

2) Colt McCoy (2) – QB Texas (Season: 3,134 yds, 30 TD, 7 INT, 527 rush yds, 8 rush TD)
255 yds, 2 TD, 78 rush yds and 1 rush TD against Kansas. McCoy continues to keep Texas in the national championship picture, and he keeps himself in the Heisman race.
Next: vs. Texas A&M

3) Sam Bradford (3) – QB Oklahoma (Season: 3,406 yds, 38 TD, 6 INT, 1 rush TD)
Off last week, Bradford has a chance to move up the list with a good performance against Texas Tech.
Next: vs. Texas Tech

4) Tim Tebow (4) – QB Florida (Season: 1,913 yds, 19 TD, 2 INT, 393 rush yds, 11 TD)
173 yds, 2 TD, 39 rush yds, 1 rush TD against South Carolina. At this rate, Florida is probably going to play for the national championship, so Tebow remains in contention.
Next: vs. Citadel

5) Michael Crabtree (5) – WR Texas Tech (Season 78 receptions, 1,010 yds, 18 TD)
Off last week, Crabtree is clearly the best receiver in the country and the only non-quarterback who has a chance to win the Heisman.
Next: at Oklahoma

Week 11 Picks

Heisman - Week 10

1) Graham Harrell (2) – QB Texas Tech (Season: 3,621 yds, 30 TD, 5 INT, 6 rush TD)
474 yds and 2 TD against #1 Texas. Last week’s performance gives Harrell the top spot this week, but the schedule is tough from here on out for Texas Tech. They finish the season with Oklahoma St, Oklahoma, Baylor and maybe the Big 12 championship game.
Next: vs. Oklahoma St.

2) Colt McCoy (previously #1) – QB Texas (Season: 2,579 yds, 23 TD, 5 INT, 428 rush yds, 7 rush TD)
294 yds, 2 TD and 1 INT against Texas Tech. The rough part of the schedule is over for Texas, but losing to the guy one spot below you is never a good idea in a close Heisman race.
Next: vs. Baylor

3) Sam Bradford (3) – QB Oklahoma (Season: 3,086 yds, 34 TD, 6 INT, 1 rush TD)
311 yds and 5 TD against Nebraska. I’m beginning to think whoever emerges as the Big 12 champion will be the Heisman winner among Harrell, McCoy and Bradford.
Next: at Texas A&M

4) Tim Tebow (HM) – QB Florida (Season: 1,569 yds, 14 TD, 2 INT, 266 rush yds, 8 TD)
5 total TD at Georgia puts Tebow right back in the hunt. Tebow doesn’t have the numbers of the Big 12 quarterbacks ahead of him, but if Florida wins out and has a chance to play for the title, the award could have its first repeat winner since Archie Griffin.
Next: at Vanderbilt

5) Michael Crabtree (HM) – WR Texas Tech (Season 70 receptions, 921 yds, 15 TD)
10 catches for 127 yds and a TD against Texas. Crabtree probably has the biggest play of the year at this point in the season, and now he’s in the top five.
Next: vs. Oklahoma St.

Honorable Mention:
Chase Daniel (4) – QB Missouri (Season: 2,675 YDS, 23 TD, 6 INT, 146 rush yds, 1 rush TD)
318 yds, 3 TD, 2 INT in Missouri’s win at Baylor. Beating Baylor by 3 points is never a good thing, but Daniel keeps putting up numbers. The problem is the guys ahead of him are doing much more.
Next: vs. Kansas St.

Javon Ringer (5) – RB Michigan St (Season: 1,427 yds, 18 TD, 130 rec yds)
54 yds and 2 TD against Wisconsin. Ringer needs to put up huge numbers the rest of the way to have a chance at the award.
Next: vs. Purdue

Dez Bryant (Unranked) – WR Oklahoma St (Season: 60 catches, 1,054 yds, 15 TD)
10 catches for 171 yards and 4 TD against Iowa St.
Next: at Texas Tech

Jeremy Maclin (HM) – WR Missouri (Season: 63 receptions, 831 yds, 7 rec TD, 1 rush TD, 1 return TD)
5 catches for 31 yards at Baylor.
Next: vs. Kansas St.

Daryl Clark (HM) – QB PSU (Season: 1,652 yds, 11 TD, 2 INT, 190 rush yds, 8 rush TD)
Off last week.
Next: at Iowa

Dropped out:
David Johnson – QB Tulsa (Season: 2,661 yds, 32 TD, 9 INT, 3 rush TD)
322 yds, a TD and an INT in Tulsa’s loss to Arkansas.
Next: at Houston

Why I voted for John McCain and why I won't be upset if he loses

First let me start off by saying that during the primary season, which seems like forever ago, I supported Ron Paul. While Ron Paul did manage to gather some attention and a decent amount of votes he ended up falling short.

I had always liked and admired John McCain. Most Republicans lost favor with him because of stance on illegal immigration but since I agreed with him my opinion did not change. However, as the primary season began to roll on I was afraid that McCain was going to jump on the party bandwagon right along with the Giuliani’s, Thompson’s, and Huckabee’s. It was in the summer when I told my father and a friend that I was going to vote for Obama as a punishment to the Republican party. However, that all changed September 4th, 2008.

Standing in front of thousands of supporters and millions watching on television, John McCain told me that the Republican party had failed me. The party became power hungry and had abused it. He told me, “we let you down.” I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. John McCain was ripping into his own party at the keynote speech of its national convention. It was that day that I realized he was not falling in line with party policy and thinking.

I also spent the last few weeks looking at issues and stances that I care about and the following are why I voted for John McCain.

Education
John McCain supports competition among public schools and keeping teachers accountable. To this day the teaching profession is probably the only job without any consequences for poor results. Allowing children the option to attend different public schools or use vouchers for private schools will only create better opportunities for a child’s education. We have competition in every other aspect of life so why should education be any different?

Health care
While I am not extremely fond of McCain’s plan I think it is much better than Obama’s alternative. Every Western country that has adopted socialized medicine has seen their overall health care quality drop and also seen their advanced health care’s quality drop, IE surgeon quality/cancer treatment. One of the reasons America has the top surgeons and doctor’s is the competition among hospitals and care centers.

Foreign Policy
John McCain is a veteran and has served in the senate for 22 years. Barack Obama has served in the Senate for 3 years and was doing cocaine at the age McCain was serving his country. It is my opinion that past judgment is the best predictor of future judgment. Obama’s only senate votes were to stop funding the troops and voting against the “surge.” Unfortunately for Obama those votes, along with hundreds of present votes, are all I have to look at. Now I’m not saying Obama has bad judgment, but rather that my view of his judgment is simply incomplete, mainly due to his age.

The following were the most important issues to me.

Abortion
It is my opinion that as a society we should do all we can to promote and encourage life. Last year in America over 1.3 million abortions were performed and of those 98% were done so for social reasons. 1.3 million. I am not going to go into why I believe abortion is wrong I do feel that abortion will become our current generations black mark, ala slavery, women’s rights, internment camps, red scare.

Taxes/Economy
The top 1% of tax payers are paying for 40% of our federal income taxes, where as the bottom 50% are paying 3%. Under Barack Obama’s tax plan, this top 1% will have their taxes raised while others will see their taxes lowered and in some cases actually receive a tax limit up to $1,000. I would have no problem with Obama raising taxes on one part of society but it’s when he lowers taxes for some at the same time do I have a huge problem. This is tantamount to bribery but instead of the person offering the bribe paying, the briber makes someone else pay it.

American corporations are paying the second highest corporate tax rate in the world. John McCain thinks this is too high and Barack Obama doesn’t think its high enough. I simply can not support a candidate that believes in “trickle up economics”. Never in the history of economics has it worked and I have no reason to believe it will.

In conclusion, unlike past elections where I found myself disliking the opposing candidate that does not ring true here. I think that Barack Obama is an extremely intelligent person with altruistic motives to do what’s best for America. I think his ability to inspire people is truly remarkable and that he has come this far is incredible. The pride and jubilation from African Americans in newspapers editorials and TV interviews is something that I will never be able to understand no matter how many text books I read or museums I visit. However his candidacy is the sign that our country has truly come a long way in a very short amount of time.

While electing Barack Obama President will not be the end of race problems in the United States it will mark the day when every child in this country can truly grow up and be anything they want to be, including President of the United States.

NBA Predictions

Eastern Conference

1. Boston Celtics – Too good defensively to not win the conference. The top end of the East is very weak other than the Celtics. Plus have you seen Kevin Garnett, he’s crazy.
2. Orlando Magic – Dwight Howard is a freak and the supporting cast is a lot better than you might think.
3. Detroit Pistons – They will win the division because LeBron won’t start jumping over Jason Maxiell until the playoffs. This will be their last division title though.
4. Philadelphia 76ers – Biggest surprise in the East last year got a whole lot better by adding a post presence. Sound like what a team should have done last year? Oh well, at least the Bulls have Derrick Rose.
5. Toronto Raptors – Jose Calderon finally takes over as the team’s point guard and shows why he is one of the best distributors in the league.
6. Cleveland Cavaliers – LeBron and the Misfits. Mo Williams will help out at point guard, but they are old and bad everywhere else.
7. Atlanta Hawks – Almost knocked out the Celtics last year in the playoffs. The Hawks have a bunch of young, talented players who could surprise.
8. Miami Heat – Dwayne Wade, Shawn Marion and Michael Beasley is as solid a 1-2-3 as there is in the league. And if they start to play well, Pat Riley might come back and coach them!

Eastern Conference Finals - Celtics over Magic in 5

Western Conference

1. LA Lakers – The best team in the league now that Andrew Bynum is back from injury.
2. New Orleans Hornets – Chris Paul is ridiculous. Can David West repeat last season’s performance?
3. Utah Jazz – Ronnie Brewer steps up and becomes another perimeter threat to complement D-Will.
4. Houston Rockets – Add Ron Artest to Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, you have a team that can win the league. Or it could go insane, force up too many shots and get hurt the second week of the season. Either way.
5. Phoenix Suns – Shaq! Ahhhhh. He’s the greatest in the universe.
6. Dallas Mavericks – This might be the last go around before a break up for Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and the pot smoking Josh Howard.
7. San Antonio Spurs – Without Manu Ginobli to start the season and Duncan getting older, it will be tough for the Spurs to make the playoffs. But if they do, they could win the title.
8. Denver Nuggets – The Nuggets beat out Portland for the last spot by a game. Portland is a year away from running people’s lives.

Season Awards

Rookie of the Year – Greg Oden. What, you say? The dude didn’t play last year; he’s still a rookie. I can’t wait for his acceptance speech. I’m guessing it somehow involves an acappella rendition of the newest Rihanna song.

Coach of the Year - Phil Jackson

6th Man of the Year – Lamar Odom

MVP – Chris Paul, he made Tyson Chandler worthwhile.

Defensive Player of the Year – Kevin Garnett, he's crazy.

Most Improved – Tyrus Thomas. Yakakakaka!

Tom's 2008-2009 NBA Season Preview

Eastern Conference

1. Boston Celtics - Will miss Posey more than they think but still cruise their way to 60+ wins.
2. Philadelphia 76ers - Andre Miller was probably the best point guard in the Eastern Conference last year, but that is like being the tallest smurf.
3. Cleveland Cavaliers - Imagine if Lebron had spent the summer working on a post up game?
4. Detroit Pistons - The NBA's version of the Colts, just old.
5. Toronto Raptors - For some reason I don't see Bosh and Jermaine O'Neal working well together.
6. Orlando Magic - They are a point guard away from being almost unstoppable.
7. Miami Heat - Did you see Dwayne Wade in the Beijing?
8. Washington Wizards - Agent Zero returns to dominance.

Eastern Conference Finals - Celtics over Cavaliers in 6

Western Conference
1. LA Lakers - Great players, great coach, great cheerleaders, they have it all.
2. Utah Jazz - Deron Williams.
3. New Orleans Hornets - Chris Paul, David West, and Tyson Chandler have all maxed their talents.
4. San Antonio Spurs - Will have trouble sticking with faster, younger teams.
5. Dallas Mavericks - Team will tank once it is announced that Cuban has bought the Cubs, signed CC Sabathia, and signed Manny Ramirez...I can hope can't I?
6. Houston Rockets - A cocktail of Ron Artest, Yao Ming, and Tracy McGrady can only lead to disaster.
7. Phoenix Suns - Steve Nash has to be the worst player to ever win the MVP, much less three times.
8. Portland Trailblazers - Within the next 10 years they will win 3 NBA championships.

Western Conference Finals - Lakers over Jazz in 7

NBA Finals - Lakers over Celtics in 6

Season Awards

Rookie of the Year - Michael Beasely, his team makes the playoffs so he wins it over Rose and a sympathetic Eric Gordon who receives votes after getting his testicles inverted during a tremendous/horrific Deron Williams dunk.

Coach of the Year - Phil Jackson, Lakers win 65+.

6th Man of the Year - Rodney Stuckey, perfect bench player for a slow and old Piston team.

MVP - KOBE!

Heisman - Week 9

1) Colt McCoy (previously #1) – QB Texas (Season: 2,285 yds, 21 TD, 4 INT, 412 rush yds, 7 rush TD)
391 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT and 1 rush TD against Oklahoma St. The brutal schedule McCoy and Texas have had to face (Oklahoma, Missouri, Oklahoma St., Texas Tech) ends this week. Somehow, McCoy has put up the best numbers against the best competition. That, to me, deserves the Heisman at this point.
Next: at Texas Tech

2) Graham Harrell (3) – QB Texas Tech (Season: 3,147 yds, 28 TD, 5 INT, 3 rush TD)
386 yds and 5 TD against Kansas. Harrell leapfrogs Bradford this week with a huge performance. This is the make or break week for Harrell’s Heisman chances and the Red Raiders’ national championship hopes.
Next: vs. Texas

3) Sam Bradford (2) – QB Oklahoma (Season: 2,775 YDS, 29 TD, 5 INT, 1 rush TD)
255 yds and 3 TD against Kansas St. Bradford struggled in the second half of the beatdown of Kansas St., but he still is having a great year on a very good team.
Next: vs. Nebraska

4) Chase Daniel (4) – QB Missouri (Season: 2,675 YDS, 23 TD, 6 INT, 146 rush yds, 1 rush TD)
302 yds, 5 TD, 1 INT in Missouri’s win at Colorado. Daniel tried to make up for the last two weeks with a good performance. Mizzou is going to have to win out for Daniel to have a chance.
Next: at Baylor

5) Javon Ringer (5) – RB Michigan St (Season: 1,373 yds, 16 TD, 120 rec yds)
194 yds and 2 TD against rival Michigan. Ringer gives himself more momentum in the race after a big week. Now he gets to beat up on Wisconsin this week.
Next: vs. Wisconsin

Honorable Mention:
Tim Tebow (HM) – QB Florida (Season: 1,415 yds, 12 TD, 225 rush yds, 5 TD)180 yds and 2 TD passing, 2 rush TD against Kentucky.
Next: at Georgia

Michael Crabtree (HM) – WR Texas Tech (Season 60 receptions, 794 yds, 14 TD)
9 catches for 70 yds and 2 TD against Kansas.
Next: vs. Texas

Jeremy Maclin (HM) – WR Missouri (Season: 58 receptions, 800 yds, 7 rec TD, 1 rush TD, 1 return TD)
11 catches for 134 yards against Colorado
Next: at Baylor

David Johnson – QB Tulsa (Season: 2,661 yds, 32 TD, 9 INT, 3 rush TD)
Leader of undefeated Tulsa cracks the list for the first time.
Next: at Arkansas

Daryl Clark (HM) – QB PSU (Season: 1,652 yds, 11 TD, 2 INT, 190 rush yds, 8 rush TD)
121 yds passing, 39 rushing against Ohio St. Pretty uninspiring, but his team is still in the middle of the national championship picture.
Next: at Iowa

Dropped out:
Mark Sanchez (HM) – QB USC (Season: 1,717 YDS, 20 TD, 7 INT)
216 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT against Arizona
Next: vs. Washington

People Who Shouldn't Be Allowed to Vote

People who own hunting guns - We live in a country where not only is there fresh meat available but in most cases you have dozens of options. Exceptions will be made for those who live far away from grocery stores and butcher shops. Also please don't give me that stupid line that deer are overpopulated. What does that mean? They are getting in the way of our roads and housing developments, the nerve.

People who go to Catholic colleges and then complain about how strict they are - We know these unfortunate souls who attended Notre Dame, Marquette, Georgetown, etc. I can't tell you how many times I picked up a Notre Dame school paper and the editorials were about parietals, sex, and alcohol policies. You knew the rules going in and unless you were promised they would be changed please shut up.

Lou Holtz - The man legitimately believed Notre Dame would win 11 games and he compared Rich Rodriguez to Hitler. I'm not a fan of Dick Rod but that's a little over the top.

Heisman - Week 8

1) Colt McCoy (previously #1) – QB Texas (Season: 1,894 yds, 19 TD, 3 INT, 371 rush yds, 6 rush TD)
29 of 32 for 337 yds, 2 TD and 2 rush TD against Missouri. McCoy and Texas are on a roll, but can he keep this up? Texas’ schedule is ridiculous, playing Oklahoma, Missouri and now Oklahoma St. in consecutive weeks. McCoy has the Heisman race by the horns now for the time being.
Next: vs. Oklahoma St

2) Sam Bradford (2) – QB Oklahoma (Season: 2,520 YDS, 26 TD, 5 INT, 1 rush TD)
468 yds and 3 TD against Kansas. Bradford continues to put up huge numbers for Oklahoma, but McCoy seems to outperform him every week.
Next: at Kansas St.

3) Graham Harrell (3) – QB Texas Tech (Season: 2,761 yds, 23 TD, 5 INT, 3 rush TD)
450 yds and 3 TD against Texas A&M. Texas Tech has been shaky the last few weeks, but they keep winning and Harrell keeps leading them.
Next: at Kansas

4) Chase Daniel (4) – QB Missouri (Season: 2,373 YDS, 18 TD, 5 INT, 112 rush yds, 1 rush TD)
318 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT in Missouri’s loss to Texas. Daniel has really screwed the pooch in his last two games, losing both. Wasn’t Missouri supposed to win the national championship this year? They can’t lose to Colorado this week or Daniel’s chances will be completely gone.
Next: vs. Colorado

5) Javon Ringer (5) – RB Michigan St (Season: 1,179 yds, 14 TD, 95 rec yds)
67 yds and no TD against Ohio St. A season low in carries and yards suggests that Ringer’s production is going to tail off.
Next: at Michigan

Honorable Mention:
Tim Tebow (HM) – QB Florida (Season: 1,235 yds, 10 TD, 179 rush yds, 3 TD)
Off last week.
Next: vs. Kentucky

Michael Crabtree (HM) – WR Texas Tech (Season 43 receptions, 742 yds, 12 TD)
8 catches for 71 yds and 2 TD against Texas A&M.
Next: at Kansas

Jeremy Maclin (HM) – WR Missouri (Season: 47 receptions, 666 yds, 5 rec TD, 1 rush TD, 1 return TD)
8 catches for 66 yards against Texas
Next: vs. Oklahoma St.

Mark Sanchez (HM) – QB USC (Season: 1,501 YDS, 19 TD, 6 INT)
253 yds, 5 TD against Washington St.
Next: at Arizona

Daryl Clark (UR) – QB PSU (Season: 1,531 yds, 11 TD, 2 INT, 190 rush yds, 8 rush TD)
171 yds, 1 TD, 45 rush yds, 2 TD against Michigan. This is the week for Clark to move up this list or fall off of it for good.
Next: at Ohio St.
Dropped out:
Max Hall (HM) – QB BYU (Season: 2,119 yds, 20 TD, 6 INT, 2 rush TD)274 yds and 2 INT in BYU’s loss to TCU ends Hall’s chances at the Heisman.
Next: vs. UNLV
